Have you ever experienced the sound traveling from one ear to another while listening to music. Well, this is because of the phenomenon called binaural beats. It produces cool auditory illusions as if the sound is traveling from one ear to another, or the sound is closer to one ear than another. This happens when you hear two tones, one in each ear, that are slightly different in frequency, Because of this different frequency beats in each ear it is called a binaural beat. Tones given to each ear differ in frequency, however the brain synchronises it to hear it in one frequency which is the difference between the two frequencies. For example; if one ear gets frequency at 100 Hz and the other ear gets it at 112 Hz, the frequency your brain hears it will be at 12 Hz. This works perfectly, given the frequency has to be less than 1000 Hz and the difference has to be below 30 Hz. Studies have shown that when you listen to binaural beats, your brain activity synchronises with the beat’s frequency. This implies that binaural beats may be used to teach your mind to achieve a specific mental state.
Many people suffer from anxiety, racing thoughts and restlessness when they lay in bed to sleep. People suffering from stress, worry, depression, and insomnia frequently report that racing, intrusive (unwanted) thoughts that make it more difficult to sleep. The period between going into bed and falling asleep may become tough due to unwanted thoughts. Binaural beats may help to calm your senses, focus on the sound, and stop racing thoughts. - Beta (β) pattern: Beta waves range between 13 Hz and 30 Hz.
- Alpha (α) pattern: Alpha waves range between 8 Hz and 13 Hz. Alpha waves are produced during a relaxed and restful state of mind.
- Theta (θ) pattern: When you are about to fall asleep your brain creates theta waves at a frequency of 4 Hz to 8 Hz. Drowsiness and meditation are also linked to theta waves. Listening to binaural beats at a frequency of 6 Hz has been shown to produce a meditative state.
- Delta (δ) pattern: Delta waves are the slowest brain waves. The frequency of these waves is between 0.5 and 4 Hz. This is produced during deeper sleep.
Beta waves are connected with alertness, but if they are sustained for an extended period of time, they might cause emotions of fear and worry. If you’re worried or nervous, understanding how to boost alpha waves while decreasing beta wave activity could be a good aim for you.

They’re slower and lower in frequency (between 9 and 14 hertz). Alpha waves are linked to states of concentration (you’re probably in an alpha state after your yoga session) and our ability to be creative. Alpha and delta beats are better for sleeping. You could listen to them for free on Spotify. You could choose the ones that are meant for sleep, and meditation for better sleep. Avoid focus and concentration based binaural beats since they stimulate beta waves which are more for alertness. And you don’t want to be alert when you are falling asleep.

Note: Binaural beats are promoted as a type of “modern biofeedback mechanism.” However, don’t turn up the volume for too long or they’ll lose their hearing. The advantages are less obvious. Binaural rhythms are said to be beneficial for meditation and relaxation. It’s difficult to claim if listening to these tones would induce a person’s brain waves to synchronize with the tones’ frequencies, as recorded by an EEG (electroencephalogram). Soundtracks pass via the brain stem, the thalamus, and the auditory cortex on their route to the auditory cortex. There hasn’t been any scientific evidence that binaural beats activate this pathway any more than white noise or relaxing music.
